It was originally founded under the name of Vegetarian Society by Aldo Capitini, the great Italian intellectual of peace and non-violence, famous for having imported Gandhi's thought into Italy. Capitini conceived vegetarianism as an expansion of the unity of love, in which even other animals cease to be seen as mere instruments for our use and consumption, to become subjects with their own dignity to be valued and respected affectionately.
